In today’s briefing:
1. A California jury awarded a woman named Donna Motsinger millions on Monday after finding Bill Cosby liable for a 1972 sexual assault. This marks the second time Cosby has been found guilty of such allegations.
2. In New York, a catastrophic ground collision at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night left at least two pilots dead and 41 people hospitalized. The incident is currently under investigation.
3. Senator Markwayne Mullin has been confirmed as the next Secretary of Homeland Security. He will replace Acting Secretary Chad Wolf, who assumed the role in November 2019 following the resignation of Kevin McAleenan.
4. President Donald Trump announced on Monday a five-day extension of his ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The President stated that “productive” high-level negotiations are underway with a “respected” Iranian official to resolve the four-week-old conflict.
5. In response to the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, President Donald Trump has deployed hundreds of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to major airports Monday. The move is intended to maintain border security during the shutdown.
6. A 25-year-old Venezuelan national in the U.S. illegally has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman. The suspect is currently in police custody and will face charges for the crime.
